Contemporary full calf, ornate ribbed spine, orange title-piece, triple cold-stamped fillets framing the boards, gilt roulette on the edges and headpieces, porphyry edges. Epidermures on the boards, rubbing on the hinges, one sheet of 4 pages out of order: 4 leaves of the Eclarcissement sur l’Histoire du Baianisme (p.9 – 16) bound with the Histoire du Baianisme (between pages 448 and 449) but book quite complete. First edition in French and Latin of this history of Baianism, a doctrine developed by Michel de Bay dit Baïus (1513-1589), a theologian at the University of Louvain who was condemned as a heresy by Pius IV in 1567. A fine copy.
