Contemporary full marbled calf, spine with false nerves, ornamented caissons with fleurons, title page, gilt fillets on covers, roulette on edges. Beginning of splitting at the upper spine ends, missing spine ends and lower headpiece, lower corner of 1st board, very slight spotting. First illustrated edition, complete with frontispiece and 5 folding engraved plates in fine, of this work by mathematician and physicist Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan (1678-1771), member of the Académie des sciences and the Académie française.
