Description

Courtalain, September 18, 1833; 23 x 18.7 cm, 1 sheet. Handwritten letter from the Duc de Montmorency, dated 1833, addressed to the Minister, requesting authorization for painter François Edme Ricois (Courtalain, 1775 – Paris, 1881) to draw the coasts and ports of Brittany. The Duc de Montmorency, lord of the manor at Courtalain, had already given Ricois his support by introducing him to the painter Gros. Ricois was a pupil of Girodet and Bertin, and devoted himself to landscape painting, traveling to France and Switzerland to paint from the motif.
