Original 3-page letter signed and dated 1857. This letter is addressed to Caroline Luguet, the daughter of her friend Marie Dorval. Caroline Luguet was supposed to spend a vacation with her daughter, Marie, at George Sand’s house in Nohant, and had cancelled to send Marie to her godmother Marguerite Merle. “Well, no. I’m not happy, my dear Caroline. I don’t like being promised something only to be broken the day before… I don’t think you’re a good mother in this. Throwing this poor little girl into old age, stupidity… I was wrong to get attached to this poor angel who is condemned to moral death… You are no longer my good children, but everyone’s children”. The violence of this letter is the height of George Sand’s love for Marie Dorval, which she passed on to her granddaughter Marie.
